Developed by crossing Asian Leopard Cat and domestic felines, Bengal cats are beautiful and energetic animals which are very rewarding to keep as pets. An extremely playful breed the Bengal is considered by many to have retained the mischievous spirit of its ancestors and owners often report that the cats need a lot of engagement in play to tire them out.
The basics of caring for a Bengal cat are similar to looking after other breeds. Your kitty will require a bed and a litter tray which you will need to clean regularly. Most owners prefer to keep Bengals as house pets, however because of their expansive energy it’s best to give them plenty of space to move around. You can buy runs for your garden to allow your cat to safely move around outside, or buy harnesses for your cat so that you can go for walks in the garden together. Harnesses tend to come in strap or jacket varieties which can be easily fitted to the cat, although some are more receptive to this than others.
Young cats are likely to eat more cat food than older cats, although some breeders recommend feeding all Bengals up to three times a day because as sleek muscly breeds they tend to burn more calories. You can feed your feline dry or wet food and cats to tend to have individual preferences in this department. Always make sure they have access to fresh water too. If you notice your pet is gaining or losing weight try adjusting the amount you give them and if you are concerned at all for their health seek veterinary advice. Many owners choose to take out pet insurance to cover their cats against illnesses.
Bengal cats are alert animals who seek out stimulation so make sure your pet has plenty to occupy them. Fishing rod style toys which they can chase are firm favourites of the breed who like to be challenged. They also like to climb so consider getting a cat tree for your home. Often cats will find their own amusement by playing with household items such as paper shopping bags. Cats love to climb in and out of these and they can keep them entertained for hours. However, be sure to make any bags safe by removing any handles they could get caught up in. When choosing toys for your cat bear in mind they can often have a second wind of energy late at night so you may want to keep nosier toys out of reach so that they don’t disturb your sleep!
Bengal cats have a sociable temperament and although as with other cats the degree of affection they give out can vary, they are capable of bonding very strongly with their owners and can offer great companionship. If you spend time stroking a Bengal cat’s smooth silky fur, you will often be rewarded for your care and attention with their unusual purr which can sound more like cooing or chirping.
